DMT – The Spirit Drug

31 Jan

Yesterday I watched a movie called “DMT – The Spirit Molecule” and found it to be fascinating.

If you have never heard of DMT, it is a psychedelic drug called Dimethyltryptamine.  It has relatively recently been discovered that just about every living organism – from plants and animals to human beings – produces this chemical.  Indians and other cultures have found ways to extract this substance from various plants and other sources and use it for a “classic Gaian experience- a directly experienced realization of the interconnection and unity of all life on Earth and our place within this most amazing tapestry”.

The pineal gland (also called the “Eye of God”) is located in the center of our brain and produces serotonin, which acts as a neurotransmitter of ordinary consciousness.  Serotonin is a very close relative DMT.

I am not a chemist so I will not be able to explain how DMT is produced in the brain but I understand that DMT reaches its peak concentration in our bodies between 3 and 4 am in most people and that’s when deep REM sleep is happening.

Due to the fact that this chemical is produced by all living organisms and is known to induce intense psychedelic experiences such as the feeling of death, scientists have opened the doors to allow DMT to be researched, which is unusual, as the effects of drugs are not generally accepted as true science and scientists that want to research drugs are discouraged.

What they have discovered from testing patients in DMT studies is that the experience varies based on set and settings of patient, but each patient does experience some sort of spiritual encounter that they are not able to explain away.

The patients come out of the experiment changed for good.

They all say that they see life differently after the use of DMT.

The question is how do we explain that one of the most powerful and intense psychedelic hallucinogens is a part of normal human metabolism?

Obviously this question is not easily answered, but we must ask it.

Can we go on ignoring that there is another function controlled by our brain – a spiritual function – that has been ignored rather than explored – until recently?

What does that mean as far as physical reality goes?  Is “reality” all there is, or is there something else that we are not aware of only because we have not been made aware of its existence until now…..because, apparently, something is located in the center of our brain that secretes a chemical that produces spiritual encounters.

Is spirituality part of our physical self?

Can we tap into it?

Will it change our lives if we do?

Apparently, the answer is yes, yes and yes!

Interesting. I do think spirituality/ spiritual awareness is somehow part of ourselves… but I wonder what that says about the reality of spirituality outside ourselves?

I would say that of course spirituality is outside ourselves as well, in the sense that our mind (which is outside our body) is what connects us to spiritual knowledge or enlightenment. DMT is a chemical made in the brain, which is physically part of us. How these two things connect – or communicate with each other – is a mystery – but somehow we have been created in a way that there is clearly some sort of portal from the spiritual world into the physical world.
I would imagine that science has waited far too long to accept that there is some sort of connection between the physical and the spiritual and it is high time we learn how to tap into it.

I will make sure to stick that in my post at the top…..
Great documentary! My daughter and I learned a lot and had a lot of pausing going on during so we could discuss the implications of what was being said.
I don’t know if I would ever be daring enough to try DMT – even under carefully monitored conditions, but I don’t doubt that the experience is life changing.
P.S. – Thanks so much for visiting my blog!!

That is the basic concept of spirituality. We each a piece of a whole. I appreciate your input here, because I have actually never spoken directly to anyone who has experienced DMT. This drug really fascinates me.
